What Is Beard Oil?
Posted on 11 April 2016
As a beard oil company, we have the privilege each day of seeing beardsmen new and old discovering, for the first time, the joys of beard oil. The reactions are familiar to us. What is this beard oil? How does it work? How do I use it? How could I not have known about it before? We know. And if Noble Grooming were a political party, and not a beard oil maker, we’d teach it in high school to every boy of shaving age.
But we’re nothing if not practical — and if the world needs beard oil knowledge, Noble Grooming has it. So below, we’ve prepared a video, followed by our answers to the most frequently asked questions about beard oil. Our gift to you, beardsman.
Q: What is beard oil?
NG: Beard oil is, to put it simply, an oil designed for use on your beard that protects and nourishes both your beard and the skin beneath it. Trust nobody who can’t answer you this in one sentence.
Q: Why would I want to use beard oil?
NG: The real question is, why wouldn’t you? Beard oil has a number of qualities that make it perfect for beards. It not only softens your beard, but it moisturizes the skin beneath, to stop itchiness and flaking. And it also strengthens, softens and protects the beard itself — meaning it’s easier to style and manage. But to top it all off, it makes your beard smell fantastic — especially Noble Grooming’s range of scents. (Unless, of course, you opt for our non-scented option, Jack.) Provided that the oil is of a high enough quality — as all of ours are — the smell is usually the main point a gentleman will use to choose a beard oil.
Q: How is beard oil made?
NG: Beard oil is made up of two main components: essential oils and carrier oils. Carrier oils make up the majority of the oil: they do a lot of the heavy duty work of moisturizing and protecting. They also serve to dilute the more potent essential oils, which have some beneficial properties for your skin and beard, but mainly give the beard oil that delicious scent you’re looking for.
There’s nothing special to the blending process itself: the oils can just be mixed. But the real skill is in the selection of the right ingredients to make sure the oil not only smells good, but does what it’s supposed to. Many off-the-shelf oils available to the average gentleman are not fit for use in beard oils. So when we are Noble are designing products, a lot of work goes into coming up with the perfect balance and using the best ingredients. Because when we’re making beard oil, we don’t take any shortcuts.
Q: What are some examples of the ingredients that go into beard oil?
NG: Among the oils we’ve used for carrier oils previously are things like jojoba, grapeseed, sweet almond, and castor. For essential oils, we have used ingredients like pine, coconut, eucalyptus, wintergreen, lavender, bay rum, bergamot, cedarwood, nutmeg, and more. However, these are not the store-bought varieties that aren’t good for the beard — but genuine, high-quality oils that benefit the beard. Because at Noble Grooming, our philosophy is that we don’t release a single oil our founder wouldn’t use himself.
Q: Are all beard oils made equal?
NG: Not at all. We’ve mentioned that we’ll only ever use ingredients that are absolutely worth their weight in the oil. However, some other companies, especially the larger ones, may tend to use cheaper ingredients — for which they can get a bulk volume discount. We don’t have time for that nonsense here. We look for the best of the best, and we make sure every oil smells damn incredible before we even think about releasing it. We can’t comment individually on other companies’ practices; but we can assure you that at Noble Grooming, our oils use only the best.
Q: How is beard oil used?
NG: For a detailed guide, please refer to our article How To Apply Beard Oil. As a general rule, it’s best used once a day, and applied directly to the beard after a morning shower. But it depends on other factors, such as the beard and the climate, as well.
Q: Where can I get beard oil?
NG: For a truly premium beard care experience, Noble Grooming have a number of product ranges of beard oils and balms at our website. Pick your favorite — and have top-quality beard care delivered to your door in days.
So there you have it: a crash course on beard oil from the purveyors of the premium beard experience themselves, Noble Grooming. And with that, and a bottle of our quality beard oil, you’ll be well on your way to a classy, attractive beard in no time at all. Good luck.
